Re: Weekly Prep Thread 30 Mar - 5 Apr
I know this sounds really old, and dumb, but I used to have a shaving kit with a brush and cup my dad gave me when i was a kid, and they stopped making the shaving soap that went in the cup, so it just went to the back of the cabinent. Well, recently and my can of shaving cream ran out, too, and needing to shave, i used the brush and water on a bar of Irish spring soap, and it worked so well, I just stuffed the bar in my old empty cup, and been using it for the last couple years. It works just as well, and no need to store extra anywhere because 1 bar will probably last 5 years.
Thanks for the idea of freezing the grains. Unfortunately I have no space left in the freezer. Maybe someday. |
Re: Weekly Prep Thread 30 Mar - 5 Apr
No, Thrifty, that's not dumb. I recently converted to an old double edge myself...most always used a brush and soap, though.
Ordered a 10' x10' shed from Sears yesterday-on sale. I'd go deeper into it, but I'm preparing MORE for inflation, a little less for TSHTF. Probabilities, ya know...Blowing FRN's with near abandon, not on credit. Now is the time for it. |
Re: Weekly Prep Thread 30 Mar - 5 Apr
Will start construction of housing for my new food supply, (chickens). I just have them in a cardboard box right now with a brooder light on them, but need to get them out of the house, as they'll soon be out of the box. (Plus, my wife thinks they stink). We're doing our best to make pets of them. The next batch of chicks will be delivered sometime the middle of April. Actually my wife wants to see if any of the hens will sit the nest and hatch any chicks, but that won't happen this year.
We've also been burning through a lot of FRNs with prep type projects. Enlarged the gardens and fencing to keep out critters. Will be starting the fencing this week. Still need to wire the new pole barn for lights and outlets. |

We plan to build a chicken pen this summer, if you find any good resources on chick hatching, please post them. Are you doing a chicken tractor or a standard pen? Our soil is pure clay, and it holds alot of moisture when it gets wet, so we will have to bring in a decent amount of fill to build a standard chicken pen. |
Re: Weekly Prep Thread 30 Mar - 5 Apr
I will need a permanent coop for them, but am considering using two chicken tractors for the summer and separating the pullets from the roosters. I think my straight runs may be high on roosters and low on pullets. I just walked into the local farm supply store and bought them right out of the brooder tanks.
The chicks I just ordered are supposed to be pullets and are Golden Laced Wyandottes. They are supposed to be well suited to colder climates. Also supposed to be mild natured, almost friendly chickens. I don't know about the hatching from eggs part. I think it might be something more common in the wilder versions. I've known of a few people who had chickens that would sit the nest and hatch, but chick survival depended on care and environment, as the hen could not provide for the young if they didn't have the warmth and safety they needed. I remember lots of chickens, but all came from hatcheries as every egg that was lain became food or cash for the household. After I grow up and got chickens, I kept a small flock for a few years. But they were given to us by people that got tried of them and/or couldn't afford to keep them, so we adopted them. We sold extra eggs to neighbors who liked fresh farm eggs better than store eggs. |

We just got back from buying more foodsaver bags, assorted groceries for pantry. I also found a dozen Streamlight Scorpion flashlights on ebay for about $22. ea. Best flashlight I've ever used.

Ours are silvers, do fine to 0F. and put out .5/day per bird. This is the first year we'll try for chicks. |

Put the final touches on the chicken coop. Let my 3 week old Rhode Island Red pullets hang outside for a few hours. They loved it!

I also have four straight razors and sharpening stones and leather strops. These are readily available on the internet. I shave with my straight razors when I want the best possible shave. It takes practice, but it is an easy skill to acquire and can be learned in a few weeks. Just don't give up after the first few times when your face will feel like hamburger. |
Re: Weekly Prep Thread 30 Mar - 5 Apr
Well, the cheapy razors last me a couple months each, and I have a bunch, and I figure if I can't get any after that, everyone else will be scrufty, too, anyway...
Added another 100 lbs of rice I got for 48 cents a lb, 12 lbs of roman beans, 10 lbs more pasta for 69 cents a lb, and another case of pasta sauce for 99 cents each |
Re: Weekly Prep Thread 30 Mar - 5 Apr
Blew my weekend wad on ammo. I bought 500 rds of 45 and 1000 rds of 223 at the Orlando gun show. I also bought a few cleaning supplies.
I will take another look at the to-buy food list this week and get some of those checked off too. |
Re: Weekly Prep Thread 30 Mar - 5 Apr
tilled up about a 10x20 piece of well lit backyard. waiting to see if there will be another Apr freeze b4 I put the starter plants in the ground. Picked up some cheap knives for the BOB and camping duffle. Got a nice, not so cheap, push button blade for those one handed applications, and another 500 rds 223.

Ordered Aquarain 4 element water filter and 1 extra p38 can opener for my keychain!
Heading to sams club and wally world later. Me thinks we are running out of time to prepare. |
Re: Weekly Prep Thread 30 Mar - 5 Apr
After 20 years of not fishing I jumped back in this weekend. A friend got me a deal on a nice Okuma reel and Uglystick rod for cats and other larger fish. In a few weeks I'll be getting ready for your typical pan fish. I'm keeping the investment pretty small but rebuilding a lot of lost knowledge.
I also bought a large supply of demolition and metal blades and for my reciprocating saw. Now I just need a solar charger for the battery chager. |
